A New Chapter (but still a Salty Soul!) April 2025.

Hello, my lovely sailors and friends,

It’s been a while since I last sent out a newsletter, and as life tends to do, things have shifted a bit, but don’t worry, the adventure isn’t over. Just changing course a little!

Stormy seas and new perspectives
Last winter, we found ourselves back on land after a rough few days in Gordon’s Bay. A massive storm—one of the worst the Cape has seen—tore through the marina and washed the jetty away, so we were stuck on the boat for 3 days with the threat of dismasting hanging over us (literally!)! I had just broken my left wrist, and the whole experience left a lasting impression on me. It was a tough time, and since then, I’ve felt a bit shaken on the water.

At the end of last year, Michael, ever the steady sailor, took SV Knowind solo up to Saldanha Bay. Our beautiful old lady (the boat, of course, not me!) needs a little extra love and care these days. She’s been a bit neglected, and truthfully, I haven’t felt confident enough to be out there myself.

Back to land—and rediscovering the simple joys
Earlier this year, I was back on land again to help care for my ex-husband after a health scare. It reminded me how much I enjoy the grounded rhythm of life on the land—gardening, catching up with friends, doing “normal” things. I realised I’ve missed those small but meaningful moments.

What’s next? A new adventure begins…
We’re at a bit of a crossroads. Michael is on the boat, tackling the to-do list to get her ready for future voyages, which he is determined to do. I’m focusing on something new and exciting: starting my own tour company! It’s time to lay a few foundations on land, but the beauty is, as Operations Manager, I’ll eventually be able to run everything remotely.

Who knows what comes next? Captain Underpants may set sail without me for a bit. I might become a land-based entrepreneur. Or I might dive right back into the sea life—I’ve been a full-time liveaboard for ten years, after all. There’s still saltwater in my veins, and I’m definitely not ready to hang up my mermaid tail just yet.

Stay in touch!
I will send out regular updates on our sailingandsunshine blog. Exciting times are ahead, and I’ll make sure you know about the decisions we make. I’m busy with a new blog about discovering Cape Town, and it’s almost ready to launch. I’ll send the link to all my subscribers. If it doesn’t appeal, it’s easy to unsubscribe.

Thank you all for being part of our journey so far—I can’t wait to share the next chapter with you.

With love and salty hugs,
Nikki and Captain Underpants.
